“Okay, I think we’ve got all we can carry in that car,” said Crowley, inspecting the three carts.

While, it had certainly not been fully stocked, the battened down supermarket had proved to be a treasure trove of canned goods and items like cereals and powdered milk. At a rough guess, Crowley thought it might sustain their temporarily reduced numbers for two weeks before they’d need another shopping expedition. He’d also found a bottle of white wine to take back to Josephine and allowed the men to take a few bottles of Jack Daniels.

While he and Coleman had been filling up shopping carts, he’d sent Mancini to see if he could find a Jerry can and siphon fuel from any vehicles close by. He knew one of the handful of gas stations that were sure to be in the vicinity would contain as much gas as they’d ever need, but was pretty sure without a working pump, they’d be difficult to tap.

Mancini was waiting as they wheeled the laden carts towards the car, jogging over to help them wrangle the carts the last fifty yards. Crowley smelt the gas.

“Mission successful I take it?”

“Yes sir,” said Mancini. “Fully loaded. Plenty to get back to the prison and do a round trip when we need to.”

“You didn’t spot any other suitable vehicles in your travels?” the captain asked, knowing the small sedan would struggle with the extra weight.

“No sir. Looks like everyone high-tailed it out of here in whatever they could. I only saw two vehicles, both locked, but no bigger than this one.”

“Alright. It will have to do, one of you gents will be uncomfortable in the back seat though. Let’s get it loaded.”

Ten minutes later they had the Hyundai fully loaded. Coleman, having lost Scissors Paper Rock against Mancini for the front seat, was squeezed into the back seat against a wall of bagged goods.

Crowley got behind the drivers wheel and they set off, the exhaust pipe scraping over a speed hump in a shower of sparks as they headed out of Macksville and back to the prison, where right at that moment, the civilian survivors were being locked in cells.
