CHAPTER 25
We were thinkingâ¦
Maci
Today is finally Friday, and I have never been happier for the week to be over. As soon as I am done watching Julia, I will be driving straight to Lake County to spend the weekend with my sister. I really need this time with her.
Itâs been a week since my last four days with Damian, then the subsequent visit of his wife. I am still in shock that I found myself in this type of a situation.
My phone buzzes with a text and I smile when I see itâs from my sister.
Alison: what time?????
Me: 7⦠ish
Alison: I am so happy!!! Ish LOL
God, I am so ready for Ali to slap some sense into my head. She has always been the funny sister who also had common sense. Me on the other hand, my mom used to always tell me that I got my common sense from my dad. Who didnât have any.
Itâs around four-thirty when I hear both Marco and Lexi entering the house. Itâs a lot earlier than I had expected them. I was thinking itâd be at least six in the evening by the time Iâd be able to leave.
âWeâre home,â Lexi sing songs and skips lightly on her feet all the way to the living room where I am playing with Julia.
âSheâs awake,â Marcoâs tone shows just a hint of a surprise. He is normally not easy to impress.
âBaby girl, you are awake,â Lexi coos and Julia lets out a surprised laugh when Lexiâs hair tickles her face. âDoes that mean youâre going to sleep tonight for us? Please?â I start laughing at Lexiâs pleading tone with the baby.
âWell, Iâll take off if you guys are goodâ¦â I start packing my backpack, making sure my laptop and charger are in there, along with the mouse and the memory stick I used earlier.
âWe actually want to run something by you if you have a minute,â Marcoâs steady voice stops me in my tracks, and I turn around.
âOh, of course I do! Whatâs going on?â
Lexi has a content Julia in her arms now and she walks toward us, stopping right next to Marco. He gives her an encouraging nod and an easy smile. I always find it so endearing that Marco doesnât really smile like that for anyone else but Lexi. At least not that Iâve witnessed.
âMarco and I have been talking,â Lexi starts, then glances toward Marco again. âThis house will go to my brother-in-lawâs parents once the paperwork for Juliaâs adoption is complete.â She starts bouncing the baby up and down. She is a little more active now that sheâs heard her name. âAnyway, we brought her here after she was born because Sarah, my sister, had all kinds of baby stuff already, and I was definitely not prepared for taking care of her. But weâll be moving soon.â
âOh,â I press a hand over my stomach, trying to calm my nerves. I am so nervous. Am I about to lose my job? What a shitty week.
