Chapter 36

When they come back from their drive without me, Sebastian doesn’t even apologise for leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere in the dark. He has a smug look on his face, like he’s being strangled by silent laughter.

Konstantinos, on the other hand, gets out of his car and paces, his feet slapping the ground with every step. Xristina has swapped cars at some point. She’s pouting, her face lit by the blue glow of her phone screen in Konstantinos’s passenger seat. She doesn’t get out to check on me either. If things were the other way around, I’d get out and ask her how she felt being left behind.

Eventually, Konstantinos slams the door that he left open.

Sebastian stands next to me and lights up a joint. I don’t enjoy anyone smoking anything near me. I was glad when we got to walk away from his pappoús’s cigar earlier. Now I’m stuck next to this choking smell unlike anything else, sickly and earthy. It hangs over me forcing me to turn away from Sebastian. I hate how the smell clings to my clothes and my hair and generally makes me feel icky from the inside out. He knows that too. I’ve told him before.

‘What’s wrong with the snitch?’ I nod towards Konstantinos.

Sebastian explodes with smoke and rippling laughter, looking like a hysterical dragon.

‘That snitch is pissed off because I’m better than him, and everyone knows it. That’s all. We’ll be going after this.’ He dips his head at the joint. ‘You got the app sorted? Ready to be my spotter?’

‘Yep.’

With the hand still holding his joint, he rubs his thumb over my cheek. I have the deepest urge to retch. ‘I’m glad I’ve decided to forgive you. I know things can be good again.’

He turns and jibes at Konstantinos, informing him that soon we’ll be off to race. I take this opportunity to move away from the safety of the olive trees and towards Xristina, who is still in Konstantinos’s car. Seeing me coming towards her, she gets out.

‘What happened?’ I break the distance between us.

Xristina says, ‘Nothing, nothing. Honestly, don’t even worry about it. Sorry we left you here on your own.’

My shoulders lift before sagging back down.

Then she shuffles, squeezes her hands onto her hips, and says, ‘Do you... Do you ever think of breaking up with Sebastian?’

‘Why would you ask me that?’

She glances from the boys to me. ‘The more I know him, the more I can’t see you two together.’

If only she knew. It’s not like I can confide in her, most certainly not here. Not at all. She’s not known for being the best at keeping secrets. Phoebe’s good at finding out gossip and Xristina is good at passing it along from one person to the next. If I told her I didn’t want to be with him and that he threatened my family, everyone would know. I can’t even imagine the anger that would unleash from Sebastian, given that my simply passing the time of day with Dinos is enough for him to get so aggressive.
