CHAPTER 11

My eyes fluttered open, and his unique scent enveloped me. I didn’t have to turn over to know he was in bed with me, even though no part of his body touched mine. Part of me wanted to remain in the oblivious sleep of the dead, where there was nobody attempting to kill me, and I hadn’t been labeled a traitor. But life was never fair, or my heart would have continued to beat.

My body still felt heavy, as if it were trying to purge the sleepiness from my bloodstream. Since the witch employed the hit squad, I was sure something had laced the bullet to immobilize me. Maybe it would have killed me if it hit my heart. I was too tired and broken emotionally to ask Rene anything.

The memories of the attack returned with the feeling of hatred and ominous intent. I shuddered before I could halt my reaction, but kept my lips firmly locked together so Rene would think I was still sleeping. The pain of those events was still too fresh in my mind, and I wished Cassara were with me instead of Rene.

He had come for me. Saved me, yet again. Rene had a knack for swooping in to dispense his fatal form of justice just before they delivered the final blow. As he lay behind me, the gnawing feeling of betrayal returned. How could he have thought I betrayed him? How did I move past this?

Those events were more painful than the attack. I had trusted him, and he had effectively kicked dirt in my face. In some ways, it was easier to face a gun. I would rather square off with Cameron a hundred times than see the look in Rene’s eyes when Dimitri mentioned the fire that destroyed Rene’s family home so many years ago.

“Raven. Will you speak with me?” Rene asked. His voice was soft, and while there was no inflection in his voice to force me, I was turning before I could resist.

His eyes regarded me sadly. They were laced with anger and something Rene rarely possessed. Doubt. Like me, they had forced him into this tortuous situation, but if trust was a test, he had failed. “I am sorry I doubted you.”

I could tell he was suffering. Either he had new evidence that supported my innocence, or he had come to the conclusion that I would never betray him. Perhaps I should have given him time, but at that moment, my heart couldn’t take it. This situation had prepared me for reality, though. I couldn’t be in a relationship with Rene. Not with other women. Hell, just us was too difficult, it seemed.

As I lay there contemplating the loss of my future. At least one with Rene. He reached out and took my hand.

“They violated our home. We detected a listening device. While we sweep for them often, this one was a PSO issue and very difficult to find. William denies authorizing monitoring of the mansion and I believe him.
