Jake and I shelved food companionably Saturday during my shift at the food bank. Weâd already gone over the fun run plans with Barb, and she seemed cautiously optimistic about our joint fundraiser. Sid had helped me contact the right department for permission to use the forest land and trails associated with the college. Jake had begged off that task, though he arguably had better connections, saying he couldnât play his mom card so soon after his stunt at the football game.
Weâd finished the repackaged rice and moved on to the pallet of canned beans when Jake broke the silence.
âSo, how was your date Friday?â
âDate? Oh, you mean Rita.â
âYes, the hottie with the body.â
âSheâs more than a body, Jake.â
He grinned at me unrepentantly. âThatâs how I know it was a date.â
âAnd there youâd be wrong.â
âNuh-uh. I know the signs.â
He held up his thumb. âClose body language.â He flipped up a second finger. âLots of smiles and laughter.â His third finger joined the other two. âAnd protesting any hot takes about your time together. All the signs and symptoms of a date. So, tell me more. Who is she?â
âSheâs a friend. She works for Professor Culver. Weâve been spending time together for the project Iâve volunteered on.â
âSpending time together?â
Jakeâs skeptical face and air quotes had me shifting uncomfortably, a can of beans in each hand. He shook his head at whatever he saw in my expression. Jake gestured between us.
âWeâre friends because no offense, I donât want to sleep with you. But Rita? You guys have vibes.â
âVibes?â
Had I been missing signs?
âVibes.â He nodded wisely. âListen to your bartender. Weâre the unpaid couplesâ counselors of the college crowd. She wants you.â
Then why had she emphasized our friendship when I dropped her off? It seemed like a clear sign to back off.
âYouâre misreading things.â
âOne of us is,â he said archly, returning to his shelving.
I stood, staring at the string beans in each hand. Not heavy, but weighing me down just the same. Like my commitment to my plan to stay friends with Rita? Like Danielâs desire to hire her? I bit back my groan. The interview. So many opportunities to bring it up with her, and Iâd missed them all. At what point did I admit it was because I didnât want to? Not an option. Iâd made a commitment to Daniel. My oldest friend. Letting him down for something that might be one-sided was pointless. I had to ask her.
