Archon
The vines were strangling Johnathan. The old manâs white-knuckled hands struggled to hold back the vines; his body thrashed as it fought for every breath. Archon turned back to the moose to find a smug smile on its face as it stared up at the old man. He knew he had to act, but how was the question.
Acting on instinct, he burst into action, moving as fast as his bulky frame allowedâthis old man had saved his life, and now it was time to return the favor again.
He talked low under his breath, âPlease forgive me. Iâm truly sorry for whatâs about to happenâ¦â
Archonâs instructors had drilled this move into his head time and time again, but heâd never had cause to try it until now. He needed it to work.
Taking swift, sliding steps, he slid around behind Bjorn before the kid could even reactâusing the felineâs confusion to his advantage, Archon slipped his left arm up under Bjornâs armpit and locked his hand across the mutantâs chest. Slipping his right arm under Bjornâs other armpit, he clamped his hand around the kidâs throat.
The kid reacted as Archon suspected anyone would haveâhe froze in shock. That gave Archon just enough time to lift him off the ground and suspend him in the air in the chokehold, lessening his options.
Heâd taken the mutant completely off guard. Looking out around Bjornâs head, he glared at the moose and made his demands known.
âLet Johnathan go or this one dies!â Bjorn struggled against Archonâs rock-hard grasp. Not wanting to scare the kid too badly, he whispered in his ear, âLook, I donât want to hurt you. The more you struggle, the more damage you could inflict on yourself. Please stop struggling. I donât wish to hurt you.â
Archon couldnât help but smile as the kid kept fighting him. Either he didnât listen or he was going along with the plan and overactingâhis arms flailed around trying to hit his attacker. Archon suspected the former was more likely. Bjorn was really struggling. Every muscle in Bjornâs body flexed, but this only gave Archon time to move his fingers along the mutantâs neck and apply a different hold. The sharp cry of pain escaping the kidâs lips cut into Archon deeply.
âPlease stop struggling. This doesnât have to hurt. Iâm just trying to help the old man. After that, Iâll take him and leave this place. Youâll never see us again.â
It impressed him when the kid leaned forward and nodded his head, even though it must have caused him excruciating pain. Clearly Bjorn finally understood why this had to happen, and that made it all the harder for the giant to feel right about this course of action. Narrowing his eyes, he glared at the moose.
For such a small creature, it surprised Archon when its deep voice bellowed out across the space.
âLet my son go and I may let you live. Continue to hurt him, and you forfeit your own life.â
Archon nodded toward the moose. He answered in an equally loud voice as he said, âI understand.
