CHAPTER 21

T’Chura leaned toward me, and it was like a solid wall of boulders leaning in. I tried not to flinch, and he frowned.

“Sorry, gut reaction. We don’t make them big like you back home.”

T’Chura sniffed and peered at my arm. “It’s changed.”

“How can you tell?”

“Because it’s moving.”

I looked at my arm, and since the intricate patterns on it made it look like an impressive sleeve of tattoos, I couldn’t see it moving. I tentatively rubbed the skin of my forearm with my other hand.

Kaz sighed. “You’re not going to be able to rub it off.”

I scowled. “I was just seeing if I could feel something on my skin.”

He rolled his eyes. “Maybe next time you shouldn’t stick your hand where it doesn’t belong.”

My gaze narrowed. “You should have been there instead of sulking in your room.”

“This isn’t helping,” Ben said in an effort to lower the temperature in the room a little.

Kaz leaned against the nearby workstation and watched me impassively.

I looked up at T’Chura. “I don’t see it moving. What do you see, exactly?”

“My species can see across several spectrums of light and energy.”

My eyebrows raised. “That explains it,” I said with a grin.

He smiled with half his mouth. “The artifact has transferred to your skin.”

I considered that for a few moments and frowned. “I never actually touched it once it was activated.” I tipped my head toward Larry. “Larry was the one who touched it.”

“While standing on your hand.”

Kaz shook his head with a derisive snort.

“I couldn’t move,” I sneered toward him.

He frowned. “Why not?”

“I don’t know. I lifted the artifact toward a group of metallic columns, and they powered on or something.”

Kaz looked at T’Chura, who shrugged.

“The captain’s account is accurate. I witnessed it,” Kierenbot said.

Kaz sighed. “There had to be a power source then. Why weren’t you able to detect it?” he said and leveled his gaze toward mine. “You didn’t scan for power sources, right?”

I considered several responses before looking at Kierenbot. “Can you check Kaz’s vitals? I don’t think he’s feeling well. Escort him to the autodoc for me, please.”

Kierenbot’s red orb darted between me and Kaz, and then he stepped toward Kaz.

Kaz lifted his gaze toward him. “Consider your next action carefully.”

Kierenbot froze and then looked at me.

“Geez, calm down, Spanky,” I said. “Yes, we scanned the area for power sources, security measures, and anything else Kierenbot was capable of detecting.”

Kaz frowned toward me. “Spanky?”

I rolled my eyes a little. “It’s not important.”

“It was important enough for you to say.”

“Now that I know you enjoy it, I’ll say it more often, Spanky.”

Kaz glared at me, and I didn’t care if he was upset. I’d had enough of his sulking attitude.

“Right,” Ben said. “So, no detectable power source, but something happened anyway. Where did the power come from?”

Kaz and I stopped glaring at each other, and I sighed. “Okay, I don’t have the technical vernacular for what I’m going to say, so I’m just going to say it. What if the power source wasn’t…” I paused for a few moments.
