Chapter XXIII

‘Rose’

4:14 PM, August 18, 2154

Rose walked beside London as they ventured past the merchant stalls. It was a busy day in their neighborhood. There were stalls and merchants everywhere, each one screaming out what their goods and prices were. There were carts, boxes, weapons, food, live animals in crates, and more amongst the merchants as people walked around to buy and sell.

Along with the guards and citizens were workers out in the street. Some were fixing Ignium powered lights or machines, while others were sweeping up sand from the last Doomstorm. Some laborers were out of factories and workshops already, joining the crowds of consumers.

London led Rose from stall to stall, purchasing goods. As they walked, Rose looked around at all the goods in the market with a big smile. Tomorrow was London’s birthday, and she wanted to get him something. Rose was unsure of what to get him. A new weapon seemed improper, while a card was dull and hard to obtain.

“Five filters?” London asked, holding a handful of crossbow bolts.

“Yes,” said the merchant in front of him.

“They were three last week.”

“I know, I know. It’s the war, London. They’re making us send a lot of supplies to the war front for the soldiers, so it’s harder to make money back here in the city.”

“Fucking war…” London mumbled, “All right, I understand that the war is making everything hard. Here.”

Rose watched as London paid five gas mask filters for the crossbow bolts, gazing at his reluctant glare at the merchandise. He sighed as they left the stall, moving through the market again.

“London?”

“Yes, Rosey?”

“Is the war going to end soon?” she asked.

“I don’t know, Rosey.”

“Are we safe?”

“Yes, I think so. It’s far outside the city; I know that.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes,” London said, stopping and kneeling beside her, “Don’t worry, Rose, even if the war comes here, I’ll protect you. No matter what.”

She leaned forward and hugged him. London smiled and held her for a while, soon releasing her and carrying on with their business.

“Ah, London, how are you today?”

London approached the merchant’s stall and nodded.

“Pretty good,” London said, “Watcha got for me today, Will?”

“Premium cuts! Got some Thresh Horn flanks today, fresh from the hunt.” Will said.

“Show me,”

Rose watched as Will leaned under his stall and pulled out some fresh, heavy pieces of meat. Thresh Horns, iron lung animals that looked like deer mixed with elks were among Rose’s favorite animals to eat. As London and Will discussed prices, she gazed past the stall and into the building behind Will.

Behind him was an old, brick house rebuilt into a butcher shop. Inside she could see a few workers handling meat, moving animal parts around, and cleaning them. Rose wasn’t disturbed by the sight of blood and flesh being handled and gazed curiously inside.

“Thirty filters for these two flanks,” Will said.

“Thirty?” London repeated.

Meat was expensive in New Uruk. It was hard to get, so it was a high-class commodity. Even so, that didn’t stop London from haggling.

“They’re fresh flanks.”

“How about we do twenty?” London suggested.
