Chapter Fifteen

I sat in my command chair, thrumming my fingers on the armrest. The command crew and a few extras were all in the Command Center. We were nearing what we expected to be the Jatarian home system, if this was, indeed, the Jatarians’ home system. It was a little surreal to think about.

I never imagined we would find it so quickly. I estimated that this mission would last about one year. Not that it was over yet. We still had to defeat the Jatarians. I intended to stick around and watch their demise, hopefully at the hands of the Morag.

I still considered whether this might only be one of their core systems and not their actual home system. How would we know? We wouldn’t, not unless we continued to look elsewhere. More Jatarian systems were surely out there.

“Fifteen minutes from the Dremu system,” reported Bryce.

I took a deep breath and braced myself for what we would find on the scans. Fritz had sensed thousands of ships here. I hoped perhaps a majority of them were the small attack ships. If they were manufactured here, it would stand to reason that more would be in that system.

Not that going up against a large number of the Jatarians’ small attack ships would be good. The Morag did now have their warbirds. I just wasn’t sure they had enough of them.

If only the Federation would send their devastators to help the Morag destroy the enemy, then we stood a better chance.

It was still hard to believe that the Emperor had no plans to send his military here to help the Morag defeat the Jatarians. He didn’t want to risk losing his ships. He would let the Morag handle it. I just wasn’t convinced the Morag could handle it on their own.

“Running scans now,” Connor reported.

I took a few deep breaths. This was it, the moment I’d been waiting on for years. I watched the monitors in front of Connor. What would they show?

Connor cleared his throat and said, “Scans are coming in. Initial scans say 3,568 ships are in the system.”

Silence filled the room. A cold chill ran down my spine. That was a lot of ships.

I took a deep fortifying breath and said, “We will exit hyperspace on the periphery of the system. We will wait there while we charge our hyperdrive. Cole, are our stealthed systems activated?”

“Yes, Captain.”

“We are ready then,” I replied.

I swallowed the bile rising up in my throat. I was nervous. I was responsible for all these people on this ship. It was my job to keep them safe. However, finding this Jatarian system was what we were here for. We had to exit hyperspace and see what was there.

I felt that old familiar twinge inside, whenever we exited hyperspace. The Command Center remained eerily quiet.

“No scans, Connor. We will wait until our hyperdrive is charged,” I said.

“Yes, Captain,” Connor replied.

The viewscreens at the front of the room focused on the system. Yet it was hard to discern anything from our vantage point.
