Chapter 12

My hands were shaking so bad I lost my grip on the phone as it rang on the other end. Thankfully, I caught it before it hit the ground and broke. Looking down at myself, I dropped into a crouch as if someone could see me. I was naked and covered in cuts that were bleeding and bruises.

I never got the full tour but assumed Thanos’ room was upstairs, so I ran up, leaving bloody footprints and droplets in my wake. There were two sides off the top of the staircase. Each section had three closed doors.

The call was answered as I headed to the right hall. “Thanos. Good to hear from you. How are things in Cottlehill?” Aidoneus’s voice was deep and friendly. It was evident in that instant this God cared for Thanos greatly.

I sucked in a breath. Here goes nothing. “It’s not Thanos. It’s Violet. He’s in trouble, and I need your help. We were attacked by demons, and he was injured, and he isn’t waking up.”

My stomach was in painful knots as I looked into the first room. A hot shower would be nice if I didn’t have more pressing issues. The next room held a bed and nightstand and had a TV hanging on one wall. It was too plain to be Thanos’ room.

“What do you mean he isn’t waking up? That shouldn’t happen. No demon should be able to injure him to that extent. What exactly happened? Could it have been the Dark One summoning demons in your town?”

The last door I opened had a bed big enough for four adults covered in navy blue bedding that looked soft as a cloud. There were knickknacks on every surface, which wasn’t something I expected to encounter. There was a picture of Thanos with another guy with messy black hair and Sapphire blue eyes.

“We were searching for the pixie mound that is on the property he just purchased here when we were ambushed by a dozen demons. Some were black dogs; others were lizards, and then there were some black and red ones with horns and sharp teeth. It was one of the latter that stabbed him in the back with some kind of blade. He was down immediately, and I had to fight them off. Thankfully pixies came to my rescue and helped me. They’re guarding him now.”

The next-door I opened was the bathroom, so I checked the other and found his walk-in closet. Putting the call on speaker, I set the cell down on a shelf and grabbed a t-shirt. I pulled it over my head then looked through the drawers built into one section of the space. I grabbed boxer briefs and sweats and pulled them over my legs.

Aidoneus’s growl sounded frightening through the phone. “Where the hell did Roscock and Hutcoth go? They should have been protecting him.”

I gritted my teeth. “He gave them the night off. Is that really important right now? He’s been stabbed, and I think he’s dying.”

I heard Aidoneus suck in a breath.
