Chapter Seventeen

We part ways for the day, and somehow I agree to go to Lydia and Westin’s for a BBQ before we head back to London tomorrow.

As we make our way to our hotel rooms, Autumn turns to me. “Was it a good day?”

“Oxford was great.”

“Tracey.”

“Yeah.” I shrug. “She’s not a drug addict. She didn’t spit in my face or want nothing to do with me.” I hesitate and wait for someone to say something. They don’t. “She’s great. She’s fabulous. She could have been my mom.”

My words seem to enter the hall with us and linger there like a heavy fog. Jakob lets out a gush of air and plops his hand on my shoulder. “I can’t imagine, really, I can’t. But maybe if she’d stayed, your mom she never would have become this fabulous woman.”

“Oh, I know.” I laugh somewhat caustically. “Getting rid of me was probably the best thing that ever happened to her.”

“No.” He shakes his head. “That’s not what I meant. I mean for you. Maybe she wouldn’t have been a fabulous mom for you. Maybe she would have been tired and bitter and resentful. Maybe your life would have been worse.”

“Maybe.”

Back in the room Emily crawls into bed almost immediately and Amalia heads for the shower. Not wanting to disturb Emily, I grab my tablet, a book, and leave for the hotel lobby.

Most of the emails in my account have to do with Aspire or school-related issues, but one is from my mother. My adoptive mother. As she’s not the most technology savvy woman, only using the computer when she must, a fear jumps within me. I tap to open the email, expecting bad news.

Hello, my lovely girl!

Are you having a wonderful time in jolly old England? I hope so. If you see Prince Harry give him a kiss for me. We miss you and hope you come home soon. Your dad is making some progress on the basement. Just some. But I’m surviving. We all have our cross to bear! Make lots of memories to bring back with you. Take lots of pictures. Send your old ‘mum’ a note to let her know all is okay.

xoxo
