Chapter Twelve

I spent the morning researching the internet for details on solar installations and private water supplies. Solar looked like the right choice. Once installed I’d be independent, bill-free and one step closer to Zombie Apocalypse survivability. When I’d looked around outside the San Tadeo house I’d managed to trace some lazy pipe work back to a small breeze block construction in the higher reaches of the garden. A wooden panel had fallen off under my examination. Inside was what appeared to be transformer of some description then some cable and plastic pipe disappeared into a hole in the floor of the tiny shelter. It had looked a bit like a fishpond pump setup. I guessed that was my fresh water well. It all looked simple enough, once I had electricity for the pump. Okay, not such a disaster.

My phone rang with an unknown number. I answered to be greeted by a flow of Spanish. I apologised for my minimal Spanish and asked the person to speak more slowly. He introduced himself as Paco, José’s brother. He wanted to look at my house on Tuesday. We arranged to meet at ten. I spent the rest of the morning with Rosetta Stone then we went to the Expats for lunch.

The usual faces sat at their usual tables. I nodded at the nodding acquaintances and said hello to the speaking ones. The ham, egg and chips were all they were supposed to be and Dot made appreciative noises about the tea. All was well in the world, only suddenly it all felt very alien.

Karen jabbered on about some charity jumble sale that was being organised to help a dog sanctuary. I didn’t pay a lot of attention until I caught, “You don’t mind, do you? I mean I don’t think I’ve ever seen you use it.”

Whoops. I either had to own up to the fact I hadn’t been listening to a word she’d been saying or agree to the unknown donation. Go with the donation, it’ll be less painful in the long run.

“Well, if you think it will do any good,” I said, wondering what to what I’d just agreed.

“Oh, good. Jane will drop by later pick up everything.”

“I think I’m going to have to put solar electricity on the house in San Tadeo,” I said.

“That will be nice. Sandy in Woking had it. You remember Sandy and Dennis, they had a holiday home in St Ives? We stayed there once, difficult parking. Oh, no, come to think of it, it wasn’t solar, it might have been a Jacuzzi.”

“Hmm? I think I’m going to take a stroll up the hill. Fancy coming?”

“No, Pride and Prejudice is on the BBC this afternoon. Mum and I have a cake.”

My walk up the hill behind our urbanisation went slowly. The afternoon sun burnt through my clothes as if they weren’t there and within twenty minutes I was a soggy mess. I sat on a rock at the peak of the first hill and stared out
