NBU

Nbu was walking slowly up the wooden stairs leading to the flat that Mel was renting. A moment ago, he overheard some floor-squeaking noise coming from upstairs. He was trying hard to make his steps light but still the wood would make a sound from time to time. After all, it was his weight and the weight of Mel he was carrying in his arms. At one point, his sensitive ear detected the sound of his own stomping and someone else’s stomping several floors up overlapping. He raised his head and glimpsed a figure creeping and staring down from behind the railing. He quickly jumped back to the wall where he couldn’t be seen and slid into the apartment.

His heart was beating faster due to the sudden surge of adrenaline. For an instant, he was afraid that his noisy behavior would wake up Mel. The room was half-dark, as was the staircase. Nbu stood there for a while, having no idea what to think of all this. He tried to calm his nerves. Soon, he heard a bang of a door being slammed upstairs followed by typical noises of somebody getting home. Was someone following Mel? Did they know that she was there? He couldn’t tell. It was quite likely that it was just a nosy neighbor. Or a landlady Mel was renting the flat from. Still, he decided to wait a little longer not to attract any unnecessary attention with further noises.

Perhaps her offer for him to sleep in the flat during the day wasn’t that bad. He could keep an eye on what was going on in the area. He looked around. There was no bed in the room— just the reclining chair where you could lie down. So, he put Mel on it, but there was no sight of a pillow or anything to cover her up with. He decided to tuck her in with the sweater she was always carrying around. If only he had brought his jacket, it would’ve made a better blanket. It was hard for him to accept what a lousy place Mel was living in. He hadn’t been there till today—he would always walk her home and say goodbye at the door. He wished to take her away from this place. It wasn’t only the question of poor conditions—Mel seemed to manage quite fine. It was more the question of the city itself and what it offered. There was nobody as mean and cunning as native Illkenians. First they would offer you a great deal but next thing you knew they would steal everything from you. He wanted take her to some place where she’d be happy and safe. But could she be happy again?

He moved his eyes from the depressing interior and looked at Mel. She was deep in her sleep, her breathing was rhythmical. It looked as if nothing could wake her up from the dream she was having. She looked so at peace. He went up to her and softly moved away a lock of hair that was falling down her cheek.
