CHAPTER 5

A fine frosting of dew coated the windows of Brady’s car. Head canted back, mouth open, he slept as if he’d fought a battle, which she supposed, he had.

She tapped on the milky glass, water pooling on her knuckles, and he startled, tossing one hand to the wheel. He turned his head and lowered his window.

“What time is it?” he mumbled.

She looked past him toward his dash. “Four. You didn’t have to wait for me.”

One hand over his mouth, he covered a yawn. He then extended his hand to hers. “I was worried and didn’t want you to think I’d abandoned you.”

Emotion caught in her throat, she swallowed around it. “I wouldn’t think that. I’d think you’d gone home to rest, shower, and change. Only so many hours left before my dad will want to see your face.”

With that, a groan emerged. Brady ran his free hand across his face. “Diaz hates me.”

She squeezed his fingers. “Yes, he does. Because you stand up to him.”

“Because I defend Levin, but that’s my job.”

“Brady ... Go home and forget Diaz. I want you to keep your job.”

He blew out a breath and nodded. He cranked the car. Their fingers still linked, however, he reeled her in. She ducked her head through the window.

“Will I see you?” he asked.

She pecked his cheek. “Call me, and we’ll see. Too much of a good thing and we might get tired of each other.”

“Not going to happen,” he said.

She smiled. “For a defense lawyer, you’re a real softie.”

“Your fault.”

She squeezed his fingers again and reversed. “Go home.”

Still, he didn’t move. “Irina ... Levin knows about us, and probably Meteger ... be careful.”

She nodded. “I have a big gun.”

This brought a smile to his face. Retrieving his hand, he rolled up his window and backed out of the drive. She watched him go, returning his wave, then made her way inside.

Head slanted downward, she rubbed the back of her neck, her steps slowing at sight of the rumpled bed.

How had she gotten in this deep so quickly? One night was now two, and if he came to the door tomorrow, it’d be three. She was addicted, to the rush, to him ... which didn’t make it right. In fact, saying no when everything in her wanted to say yes proved harder and harder to do.

Seating herself on the mattress, Irina curled her head in her hands, a prayer on her lips. “God, I need this man ... I thought I was strong, but I’m not. The baby, Levin, my dad ... It’s all too much. Without Brady, I’m sunk. Don’t take him from me ...” Her eyes burning, she blinked back the sob that threatened to emerge.

In that instant, her stomach heaved, and eyes wide, she sprinted for the bathroom. Leaning over the toilet, hands shaking, the pressure of it all returned, and the tears came at last. She collapsed, sliding down the bathroom cabinet, her fears taking over the room.
