Jill

I liked him.

Probably, I liked him a little too much. He really was different now, though. He was stronger. More mature. Calmer.

And he’d told me that he was worried, too. He was afraid, too.

Most men wouldn’t just blurt that out like it was nothing, but he had. He’d done it. He’d shared.

And I liked that about him.

I liked the fact that he hadn’t been afraid to tell me how he was feeling. He hadn’t been afraid to admit that we were in a weird sort of position together or that the two of us were going to be embarking on this weird and insane journey on a whim because we were trying to save Cadell.

I didn’t know what the people of Arbre were like. I didn’t know what they were going to do before we got there. I didn’t know if Cadell was going to be hurt or tortured before we arrived, but I did know that he needed our help and we were going to help him.

After a bit of searching and a little bit of discussion, Hunter and I managed to find a path that seemed to work. It wasn’t a usual sort of route and it would take us to a landing point away from the main cities, but if we could make this work, then we could land on Arbre and go find Cadell: hopefully before it was too late.

“We’ve got two hours,” Hunter said, leaning back in the seat. He set the course and managed to put everything on autopilot.

Still, neither one of us was willing to leave. We weren’t going to be able to relax. Two hours wasn’t exactly a lot of time to get ready for whatever it was that we were going to face. I knew that even though I was tired, there was no way I’d be able to sleep right now.

“I’ll sit with you,” I told him.

For a minute, I thought he was going to banish me below deck and send me down to think things over or to consider whether or not I was doing the right thing, but he didn’t. Instead, he looked at me and nodded.

“That would be fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’d like it,” he told me.

For some reason, I thought that he was telling me the truth. He’d like it. He’d like to sit with me. He’d like to be there with me.

So, we sat there. We didn’t speak for a long time. We just watched the empty skies in front of us. I wondered what Cadell was thinking and what he was going through. I wondered if he was scared.

“You don’t think they’re going to hurt him, do you?”

“I think they want to kill him,” Hunter said. Then he added, “but they won’t do it until they reach the planet.”

“No? Why not?”

“Because whatever they’ve got planned for him, it’s going to be dramatic. Plus, they’ll probably want to confirm that he’s actually Andryssi.”

“Do you think that once they realize he’s not, he’ll be okay?”

Hunter shook his head, though.
