Richard Price

The mind boggles at the thought of what Bear Bryant’s first impression of Richard Price (b. 1949) must have been. Price arrived at the University of Alabama in 1979 to interview the football coach who earned his nickname wrestling carnival bears and almost killed off his early teams with training camps more brutal than anything the Marine Corps ever devised. And here was this skinny, twitchy, baggy-eyed writer with long hair, an earring, and a Bronx accent, and he said he was from Playboy, with all those pictures of naked women that can sap a young linebacker’s energy faster than lightning. Though only twenty-nine at the time, Price had written three novels—The Wanderers (1974), Bloodbrothers (1976), and Ladies’ Man (1978)—all lusty and vivid and brimming with street smarts as foreign to Tuscaloosa as a bagel with a schmear. He has since written five more novels, including Clockers (1992) and Freedomland (1998); received an Oscar nomination in 1986 for his screenplay of The Color of Money; and won an Edgar Award in 2007 for his writing for the brilliant HBO series The Wire. None of them, however, may have presented Price with as big a challenge as understanding Bryant when he started speaking in that tobacco-cured mumble of his.
