Chapter Fourteen
The door of the soldierâs cabin had been forced open, and no one had noticed. Their team had been the second to last to patrol. Theyâd come back on schedule and had all sacked right out. Sometime between their patrol return and the wakeup call, the lock on the door had been forced open quietly enough that no one noticed.
Then someone had entered, also without waking anyone else, and somehow captured and silently removed the soldier.
It had taken a bit to find a single set of tracks leading away from the camp and into the woods.
Fool had found it. Because of his and Jackalâs higher perceptions, they seemed to have the best chance of tracking, along with one Mousekin with some Levels in tracking. They were hastily sent out to try to find where the trail led. Holland and a tactical team would follow up once they got some intelligence on what had happened. Everyone else was spending the morning securing the camp and setting up alarms and traps.
The prints were roughly human-sized, but of a different shape. And they left a deeper impression than any but the heaviest human would leave. The kidnapper was either extremely high Leveled in stealth or was using some high-tech equipment. Neither option presented anything theyâd expected in Wells Gray Park.
Theyâd expected high-Level monsters, but this spoke of sentients. Holland had warned them to be extra careful, as he had a hunch this was the work of a military outfit. He wouldnât say more than that.
Jackalâs gut was telling him the same thing. Something was odd about all of this. What made the most sense was that someone had grabbed the Mousekin to gather intelligence about the whole group. If that was the case, then they likely had a small window to actually rescue him. Once the enemy had everything it wanted, theyâd kill him and dump the body somewhere. Same if they figured they couldnât get any information.
As a bonus though⦠if the enemy hadnât kidnapped the Mousekin, their group would probably not know an enemy group was in the park, and they might have walked into an ambush later. So now they had some warning.
The question was, who or what were the opposition? If Holland was right and it was a military group, what were they doing here? Wells Gray Park had been one of the remotest places in BC before the apocalypse, being that it was in the middle of the province. The terrain was starkly inhospitable, consisting of near endless mountains with no clear way to build a road or railway through it. It was remote enough that even though it was mineral and resource rich, it had been almost completely ignored by colonization.
It had also been the site of the most recent vulcanism in the area, with eruptions as recent as a few hundred years ago. But even for the advanced tech of the System civilizations, there was nothing here that couldnât be found easier elsewhere. There were no trappings of civilization at all, so no reason for a military operation to take place.
