Chapter 23

Liza rants as we walk to the elevator, "Mark my word, I'll cut your brother the next time he embarrasses me in front of the team."

"Well, I may help you. I don't know what's gotten into Dusty."

"I know darn well what's wrong with him. That she-demon ex-wife of his, Bethany's come back for more blood."

That's a name I wasn't expecting to hear anytime soon. Bethany Roberts was Dusty's wife, for a hot minute a month after he graduated from college with his undergraduate degree.

She was under the impression he would take over the family marina business from Mama. She liked the idea of being a business owner's wife. The summer after his graduation, when Dusty began graduate school, Bethany realized her dreams may not happen. After numerous fights that required family members to intervene, Dusty finally did them both a favor and filed for a divorce before anyone got hurt. That should've been the end of it. But after Dusty's first book hit the bestsellers list, Bethany sued for a portion of the proceeds. She convinced a Birmingham judge she had been instrumental in the layout and research of the first book. I know for a fact Bethany never read, much less outlined Dusty's first book. Nonetheless, she ended up with twenty-five percent of all the net earnings from the first book and ten percent from all the subsequent books.

"Dusty's too smart to get mixed up with her again."

"Sure, he is. I'm sure if your brother had his way, he'd never talk to her again. But that's not going to happen if he's earning money. She refiled against the judgment, and the twenty-five percent has been prorated against all his earnings. Retroactive."

"All?"

"All. As in including the books that were originally at ten percent. That means Dusty has three books he's got to make up a fifteen-percent royalty on and cut her a check for."

"That can't be right. How do you know that?"

"You'd be surprised what your brother talks about after a beer or two."

I'm not saying I know everything about Dusty. But I have my doubts Dusty would talk loosely about personal money matters to his teammates after a few beers. I spent the weekend with him at the Renaissance fair earlier in the month, and he didn't mention Bethany taking him back to court. And we had way more than a few beers together.

I almost let the leash off my curiosity and reach out to see what else I can glean from Liza. She may have guessed my intentions as she steps further away from me as we walk.

"Maybe a good cup of coffee will help everybody's nerves. Hopefully, the kitchen is already in gear." She says as she slaps the elevator down button on the wall.

Her face contorts into a grimace. "Oh, for the love of…"

"What is it?"

"Our nasty little friend left something on the elevator buttons." Liza rubs her hand on the back of her jeans.

"That's the first time I've heard of a spirit needing to use an elevator.
