CHAPTER 18
Word quickly swept the castle of the confrontation with the Redcaps⦠and to Amandaâs dismay, she, too, was part of the story. It seemed Grayfang had been far from quiet in his shouted threats and demands about her, and the rest of the men had put two and two together⦠especially when theyâd returned to the Keep to find Amanda waiting there on the steps for Alastair. The murmurs and whispers were a little irritating, especially as she couldnât help feeling guilty⦠but the other women were quick to reassure her that she hadnât done anything wrong.
âBut heâs obsessed with me, this goblin,â she kept saying, grimacing. âThey wouldnât be this aggressive if it wasnât for me.â
âItâs still not your fault,â Anna said firmly, her eyes burning. âSome monster from beyond the Burgh being a terrible creep has nothing to do with you, so donât give it another minute of thought, alright? This is what the Clan is here for,â she said, pride glowing on her face. âThese people have centuries of experience and wisdom in dealing with exactly these kinds of threats. There are scholars going over the records for any historical examples of this kind of behavior from Redcaps, the men have all doubled their patrols⦠it wonât be long before these Redcaps are out of our lives for good. Okay?â
âOkay,â Amanda said, fighting the urge to sigh. âI just â I wish I could do something useful.â
She said as much to Alastair, whenever she saw him⦠but as the days went by, that became less and less of a possibility. He had insisted on being on as many of the extended patrols as he could, not trusting the other guards to handle the Redcaps with enough skill⦠and so some of the saucier gossips whispered it was because he had a personal stake in the effort to exterminate the obsessive Redcap who so badly wanted to make Amanda his. His what? His property, his wife, his dinner? There was no way of knowing, really.
Alastair did keep making time to see her, though. He was his usual taciturn self after the brief glimpse of emotion sheâd seen from him the night heâd come back from that first patrol, but she was beginning to suspect that he was the kind of person who showed his feelings through actions, not words. And those actions were often dragging himself to her door, even half-dead from exhaustion, to check in on how she was doing and to fill her in on the efforts to hunt down the Redcaps. It did make her feel better, knowing how much effort was going into hunting the goblins down⦠but at the same time, she was worried about how thinly Alastair was spreading himself.
They talked about Grayfang a lot. At first, she was happy to go over and over the confrontation sheâd had with the gang of goblins on that first night, pleased that Alastair was taking her seriously. She covered every detail she could,
