Around 10:00 PM, Emmett and Max boarded the L train. They road the line heading toward Eastside, where Clara got on. Then the train looped around toward downtown before looping around again.

They’d each dressed in casual civilian clothes as Venture advised. Emmett left his new suit at home and wore his normal hoodie and slacks with bodysuit underneath. Clara wore loose-fitting pants and a track jacket, which hid a low-profile exosuit beneath. Meanwhile, Max had copied Emmett’s outfit instead of wearing his baggy super coat. Each carried their regular masks and white domino masks in their pockets.

They’d discussed capabilities going in:

Emmett would be the least impacted, seeing as how he could comfortably hide his mods inside his prosthetics. Getting to his leg compartments where his concealable pistol and sonic blaster were located would take longer than usual. He'd opted for slacks with some stretch, but it would still take a split second to hike his pant leg up.

Max had an old hoodie that he’d worn before he’d made his coat. The fabric was tattered and Clara had to hem the right shoulder back together, but Max insisted it would stop a bullet. Instead of his normal backpack, he’d stuffed a fanny pack absolutely full of his usual gadgets and tucked a slingshot in the waist of his pants. Emmett had expected the hoodie to bulge with all the stuff Max had stuffed under it, but he’d imbued the fabric to hide the things he carried. Instead of looking like Santa Claus with a pillow stuffed beneath his shirt, Max’s hoodie looked like he had nothing at all beneath it.

Clara’s exosuit wasn’t visible beneath her baggy clothes. She pulled up her jacket sleeve to reveal a thin material that looked like dark-blue fish scales. Light seemed to bend around it, blurring at the edges, the effect even extending to the fabric of her jacket. She explained that since this exosuit didn’t have the defense rating of her normal one, this suit was made to half-cloak her movements, making her both harder to hit and harder to defend against. She wouldn’t have access to her kinetic blasts, but what the suit lacked in ranged attacks, it made up for in close quarters. Her normal exosuit could deliver rocket-powered punches and kicks—the effects were powerful if crude. But the scales of her current suit acted as a whole-body version of her combat thrusters, allowing her an unparalleled grace and control.

Apparently, Clara had practiced with the suit for years, but never had a chance to take it out of the lab.

The trio sat together on the L train, talking quietly in code about their powers. The paint of the interior walls was cracking where white had been repeatedly painted over graffiti tags. Conversations layered over the music; cologne and sweat did similarly with the smells of industrial cleaner and half-dried paint. Tonight the train was packed, but no one else paid them any mind. It felt like everyone was ready to take advantage of Saturday night.
