Mary McLeod Bethune was born in 1875 to former slaves in Mayesville, South Carolina. She became an educator and eventually moved to Florida, where she started a school in Daytona Beach with five little girls, faith in God, and $1.50. She was a champion of education and a better way of life for blacks. (Courtesy of the State Archives of Florida.)

First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited the campus of Bethune-Cookman in March 1953. While visiting, she was a guest at the home of Mary McLeod Bethune. Pictured here in the front row of a group of women after breakfast at the home are, from left to right, Mary McLeod Bethune, alumnae and donor Marjorie Joyner, and Roosevelt.
