I want to ride to the ridge where the West commences
And gaze at the moon âtil I lose my senses.
I canât look at hobbles, and I can't stand fences.
Donât fence me in.
No, Papa, donât you fence me in.
By the songâs end, the applause was mutual.
âOkay now, skedaddle,â Madame said to Alma. âYou have school in the morning.â
Thelma wondered who this girl was to St. Clair but thought the better of asking while her host poured. âThank you, Madame St. Clair.â
Madame St. Clair sat back with her teacup and let out a deep laugh. âCall me Queenie. Everyone does.â
âOf course, Queenie,â Thelma said. âHow did you get here from France?â
Queenie laughed again. âNever been to France. My motherâs French. I was born in Martinique.â
Thelma didnât have a clue where that was, but it sounded French.
âMy parents brought me here. Same American dream as everybody else,â Queenie said with a smile, but she looked deeply into Thelmaâs eyes. There was a penetrating quality about her, conveying sheâd no need to spill her secrets because Madame St. Clair could read them.
The doorbell rang.
âThatâll be him.â
Thelma knitted her brow.
âListen now, Thelma, thereâs not much time.
âI understand youâre trying to give Salvatore Giancarlo the runaround. You should know that man saved my numbers business. But hereâs something else you need to knowâhe did it to get back at Lucky Luciano for trying to take over his racket in Florida.â Queenie paused, looking toward the hallway, where Alma was collecting the new visitor. âBut that same man sent his own son off to war when he couldâve spared him.â
Thelma sat, stupefied.
Queenie held her with a soul-piercing, kohl-eyed gaze. âYou know exactly what this has to do with you. Remember, everyone wants something. Find out what it is before you dismiss it without consideration. Thatâs how you gain the upper hand.â
She rose and offered a slight bow, which Thelma found odd. âAu revoir, ma cherie,â Queenie said before exiting through french doors.
âThelma?â Salvatore Giancarlo entered from the hallway, his massive frame blocking any hope of exit. âYouâre a real sight for sore eyes.â
