Senseless, Sergeant crumbled to the floor, her head slanted against the man’s boots. If they’d physically ripped her heart from her chest, it would have been less painful. A sob escaped and she gave into grief, wailing until, sinuses clogged and lungs emptied, the room swam in her vision. The voices around became a jumbled echo reverberating against the sides of her skull and she fell into the chaos of her mind.

A slap to her left cheek and one to her right brought her out of her daze. Hauled up from the floor, numbly she gazed through tear-streaked lashes, at the cold face before her.

“She needs to sober up,” the blond man said. “Put her in a room and stand outside the door. I’ll deal with her in the morning.”

He disappeared in her vision, wavering at first then blending into the wall, and she sagged, defenseless in the hands which carried her. She was taken out a side door and down a covered walkway into another small building at the end. Here, she was dumped on a cot barely big enough to hold a child.

The cot smelled unwashed; someone else had been sleeping there for quite some time, and the sour scent filtered into her nostrils churning her empty gut. Yet she didn’t move; she couldn’t move, for paralysis had claimed her.

She began a whine. “Giovanni.” She repeated his name with a horrible moan. “Giovanni.” She increased its sound to a wail. “Giovanni,” she cried again, her throat clogging and voice cracking.

Then the rapid crack of a gun pierced into her mind, and his name became frantic on her lips. Sobbing, clutching the soiled bed sheets, she once again began to scream.
