The final racer finished their run, and Raith stared at the screen. Four-hundred seventy-fifth. Carter remained on top, but he didn’t have time to think about him.

With a week to go before the start of the first lap, Raith gathered the crew in their main lounge, as always. Charts and maps floated around him in AR, displaying a variety of different vectors and contingencies for the most difficult sections of the course.

“Okay. I know I’ve not done this a lot.” He stopped, thinking they might all be rolling their eyes, but Erika, Donyi, Harrison, and Bonta all listened intently. “But . . . I need a full team watching me on the next simulation run. All eyes on deck.”

“So you’re actually going to let us in your ear now?” said Bonta. “Not just post-run reports?”

“Not really sure what we can add,” Erika and Donyi said. “It’s not like we understand navigation any better than Bonta.”

“I know, I know,” Raith said, “but everyone’s perspective will be useful. Or just to have you in my ears. We can do this.” And he could prove to Carter he trusted someone other than himself.

“So what do we have up here?” Harrison said. “These vectors. These checkpoints.”

“I’m pretty sure I’ve nailed down most sections, but the ones tripping me up are light-years eight, seventeen, and forty-four. And if I’m going to catch four-hundred seventy-four pilots in five hundred light-years, we need to be flawless. We need to be passing on every void stretch, cutting seconds off our time on every element. No mistakes. No flaws. Just perfection.”

“You realize,” Bonta said, “you’ll need to trust me when I say not to do something.”

“I know. I will.” Noticing Bonta’s glare, Raith added, “I promise.”

“Then into the simulation we go.”
