Product and ingredient certifications periodically test that a supplement contains the ingredients listed on the label, in the declared potency and amounts. They also test for certain contaminants such as heavy metals, microbes, and pesticides. Product and ingredient certifications are offered by NSF and USP. They are usually found on multivitamins, omega-3, and other general health supplements. You can look for the following marks on product labels.

Banned Substance Certification

Banned substance testing intends to provide athletes with assurances that they aren’t taking anything banned by their sport. Banned substance certifications regularly test products for adulteration and banned substances, and verify label claims. Banned substance programs generally use ongoing batch or monthly testing along with randomized product sampling. Tests are often conducted at the same type of laboratories used by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Banned substance testing is typically used for sports supplements such as protein powders and pre-workouts. However, due to the banned substance list of the NFL and NCAA, most programs will not certify weight-loss products regardless of their ingredients.

Banned substance certification is very expensive, costing companies’ tens of thousands of dollars per product. As a consequence, banned substance certification is more common among big companies. Banned substance certification is offered by NSF, Informed-Choice/Informed-Sport, and BSCG. You can look for the following marks on product labels.
