MIXING FLASH AND AMBIENT

Mixing the flash with ambient light either outdoors or inside provides two options. We can let the existing light become our highlight and use our flash for shadow control or vice versa. The key to success is getting the right blend of ambient and flash lighting to suit your vision. Either a flash meter or trial and error is going to be needed to achieve this mix.

As seen in the next sequence, it takes the power of a big flash to out-gun the sun. Before the wedding, Steve Nowland (the photographer) and the groom (my oldest son) scouted a scenic mountain location, formulating a plan for the wedding-day photography. They went at the same time of day as the ceremony was planned for, in order to find the exact location of the sun.
