Potato Soup

Three penniless wanderers met on a lonely road and said, “Let’s camp here for the night and keep each other company.” So they lit a fire on the verge and huddled around it. One of them had a cooking pot and he set some water to boil, but when it was bubbling furiously they discovered they had nothing to put into it.

“A fine meal this will be!” sighed the first wanderer.

“Just hot water!” sniffed the second.

“Wait a moment!” cried the third as he felt in his bag. “I think I’ve found an old potato. Let’s boil that and have potato soup!”

They were excited by this development and happy to watch the potato rise and fall in the pot. After twenty minutes of being boiled they each took a spoon and sampled the soup.

The first wanderer said, “I can taste buttons!”

The second said, “It tastes of pockets.”

And the third made a face and grumbled, “It tastes to me like a collar. I wonder what this means?”

They pondered for a long time.

Then the first wanderer said, “My confidence was coming apart but the buttons of this soup are holding it together again and I feel much more positive about the future…”

The second wanderer said, “I had nowhere to put my dreams before eating this meal, but now I can keep them in the pockets that I’ve just digested and I won’t worry so much about losing them…”

The third wanderer said, “The collar of this repast will enable me to keep warm whenever I reach the neck of the woods. This is good news for all of us, but how did it happen?”

The other two wanderers shrugged.

Suddenly the third wanderer clapped his hands. “I know why. It’s obvious now. It was a jacket potato!”
