Nick is not at work the next dayâheâs gone surfing with Maxâand I find myself missing his banter. He was quiet when he dropped me home last nightâlike, weirdly quiet. Not on a Dad or Van level, but for Nick it was definitely out of the ordinary.
Theresa comes over for a chat after the lunchtime rush has passed, before the early birds appear for dinner.
âHow was the film?â she asks with a smile.
Sheâs lovely, Theresa. Iâve always liked her. Weâre about the same heightâher boys tower over both of usâbut sheâs quite voluptuous, with long, dark hair that she usually wears down. Sheâs glamorous, but warm with it, not aloof or in any way full of herself. And she has her sonsâ eyes: Castor bottle-green.
âBrilliant,â I answer her question. âVery entertaining. You canât really go wrong when it comes to Brad Pitt with his top off.â
âDid Nick enjoy it?â she asks.
âI think so. Not for the same reasons as me, though.â
She gives me an appraising look and Iâm curious to know what sheâs thinking.
âI shouldnât interfere,â she starts to say, and that little voice inside my head goes, Uh-oh. âBut you do know that boy is smitten with you?â she finishes.
I stare at her, stunned.
âI havenât seen him like this before,â she divulges, clearly in two minds about whether to say anything. âHeâs a different person on the days youâre not working.â
âIn what way?â Iâm taken aback.
âHeâs like a bear with a sore head,â she reveals.
âYou mean heâs even worse when Iâm not working?â I ask with alarm. The poor staff!
âOh, sweetie,â she says with an indulgent smile. âHe only gives you a hard time because heâs trying to get your attention. âBear with a sore headâ is the wrong analogy. When youâre not here, heâs as meek as a mouse.â She gives me a helpless shrug. âI know Iâm his mum and I should stay out of it, but Iâve known you for a long time, Nell, and I love you to bits. Youâre such a good girl. Heâd kill me if he knew we were having this conversation, but I hope you donât write him off. Heâs done a lot of silly things over the years, but if you could find it in your heart to give him a chance, I think he might surprise you.â
I donât even know what to say once sheâs finished spilling her sonâs secrets.
She pats my shoulder and leaves me to ponder her words. And ponder them I do.
