CHAPTER 23

Amazing

She finally said the words I’d been craving, I think to myself as we lie in bed much later, staring at the ceiling fan spinning fast above our heads.

We are both on our backs, her with the sheet tucked under her arms, and we are holding hands. I turn my head to look at Ali and I grin ear to ear when she does the same. I turn on my side and slide my hand over her waist, enjoying this quiet moment with her.

“You about made me pass out in there,” she starts laughing as she brings her hand up to touch my cheek. “I could’ve fallen and cracked my head open.”

She is so dramatic sometimes. Like I’d ever let anything happen to her on my watch. My head would be cracked open way before hers.

“What a way to go though, right?” I tease her and kiss her nose.

“For sure,” she lifts her head to reach my lips and presses her mouth gently to mine.

We just lie here for a while longer, unwilling to get out of this bubble we put ourselves in. It is so much better than anything else in this world right now. However, I can see on Ali’s face the exact moment when reality intrudes and takes space in her head.

“How far do you think they’ve gotten by now?”

I check the time and notice that it’s been only a couple of hours since Dylan and his club brothers took off with my nephew. “Not very far, baby.”

“I miss him already,” she sniffles, and I don’t need to ask who she is talking about.

Ali managed to forge a strong relationship with Ethan in the last three weeks, probably building on what they already had from his time in her classroom. You could see the love on both their faces every time we were together.

“We’ll go visit this summer before you go back to work, I promise,” I tuck a piece of hair behind her ear and try to assure her that she will be seeing Ethan soon.

“Is Dylan going to be okay with that?”

Ali is not stupid. It is obvious that she’s caught on to the fact that not only my brother is not very fond of her, but he was very unhappy with the fact that Ethan seemed to like her so much. And I am sure that played a part in them leaving early. He pretty much said so without so many words every time he’d warn me that I needed to remind my woman that she was not Ethan’s mother.

“I don’t give a fuck about that, baby. We’re going.” I continue petting her hair and she is milking it for all its worth, stretching and mewling like a little kitten.

We resume our quiet time as we lie side by side, enjoying each other’s presence. I decide to bring up what happened in the shower because I need her to tell me that she understands she is mine now. No ifs or buts.

“You were amazing earlier,” I decide to start with.
