Much can be learned about ourselves and the unconscious reactions of our minds and bodies simply by paying attention mindfully, while we hold a body position or pose.
Yoga teachers often invite their students to âexplore their edgeâ in this way.
The exploration can be any position. Play with the following gentle practice for increased self-awareness.
Take any safe and well-supported position you like.
Breathe mindfully for about a minute.
Set your intention. For example, âMay this practice bring me flexibility and wisdom.â
Mindfully inhale as you move one or both of your arms out to your side, forming a right angle with your torso. Keep breathing mindfully as you hold your position. Holding.... Holding....Breathing....Holding.
Let your mindful attention include and allow all the sensations arising in your body, without struggle. Notice any thoughts and release them without struggle. Keep breathing mindfully, letting it all be as it is.
Exhale mindfully, and let your arms float down to a resting position. Notice how that feels.
