Chapter 15

I woke before dawn, a little spoon curled up against Judge Beck. His breath stirred my hair, his hands holding me tight.

Last night had been amazing.

He’d been amazing.

I hoped that I’d been amazing as well.

As much as I would have loved to sleep in, and maybe to wake up for a round two, I hadn’t cancelled with Daisy and she would be coming through the door in the next ten or fifteen minutes for our sunrise yoga.

I opened my eyes and looked into Cagney’s brown orbs. She was sitting at the edge of the king-sized bed, staring at me intently.

The dog was clearly confused about what was going on here. I had to admit I was a little confused as well, but that happy glow made me willing to just go with it, in spite of the uncertainty that lay before us. I got the feeling we were hovering at the edge of that “L” word. Honestly, I was already in love, but I knew that it would take time to see how deep our feelings went before I said the word.

Cagney didn’t seem as concerned about our emotional connections or what sort of activities the judge and I had been into last night. She was probably only curious about why I was in this bed and not in my own room.

A yowl sounded outside in the hallway and I realized Cagney wasn’t the only one disturbed by the change in routine. Taco slept in my bed with me every night, and while he apparently hadn’t been all that bothered about having the mattress to himself, he was now ready for breakfast and annoyed that I wasn’t where I was supposed to be—which was in the kitchen, putting food into his bowl.

I slid out from under the judge’s arm and leg, trying not to wake him. He grumbled in his sleep and turned over while I searched in the dark for my discarded clothing, finally giving up and sneaking back to my room to throw on my yoga attire. By this point Taco was weaving around my legs, purring and making it really difficult for me to get dressed.

I finally managed to get my pants and sports bra on before grabbing a T-shirt and my sneakers and heading downstairs. Priority one was obviously to feed the cat. Priority two was to get the coffee started. It had just begun to brew when I heard Cagney’s nails on the stairs. Pulling her bag of food from under the sink, I put some in her bowl, careful to separate the dog and the cat. Neither one liked to share—especially Taco. We’d had a few issues early on when Cagney had gulped down her food in record time and nearly got a face full of cat claws trying to steal Taco’s food. And the cat was just as bad, hissing at Cagney and helping himself to the dog chow while Cagney stood aside and watched with sad and hungry eyes.

Separating them and monitoring the dining situation had worked.
