Treating gravel rash

Gravel rash is the most common consequence of a crash. While only superficial it can be painful, but as long as you look after the wound carefully and it doesn’t get infected it is not serious. Here are some tips:

•Clean the wound as thoroughly as possible and as soon as you can. Do this by ‘jetting’ saline solution over the wound to carry away any debris without embedding it into the wound, then use sterile wipes.

•Once you’ve got rid of the visible muck, clean the wound and area around it using a mild antibacterial soap, a washcloth and lots of water. Then pat the wound dry. If there is anything embedded in the wound it is best to go to a minor injuries clinic where it can be removed properly.

•The best way of healing gravel rash is with a hydrocolloid dressing. Once applied you can leave it in place until healing has occurred. It’ll drop off in a week or so to reveal new pink skin that will need protection from the sun. Keep a good supply of different hydrocolloid dressings in your race bag and medical kit at home.
