Whether you’re a competitive athlete or an occasional exerciser, it can be hard to resist the allure of pills and powders that promise to let you go faster, lift more weight, or feel less fatigued. You can find a dizzying array of fitness supplements online, at gyms, or on the shelves of supplement shops, health-food stores, pharmacies, and supermarkets.
Most of these products haven’t been proven to work, some could be harmful, and none are necessary for exercise. But if you’re looking for a competitive edge, there are a few standouts that have proven benefits and, based on what’s currently known, appear to be relatively safe. Others have more limited science behind them but enough to suggest that they may be effective for at least some people. Here’s the lowdown on a few popular supplements.
