Hillary Clinton is redefining what America expects a First Lady to be

Bill and Hillary Clinton met at university, and it was she who was expected to have the celebrated career. A brilliant lawyer, her friends urged her against marrying Clinton, warning her that her own prospects would be eclipsed by his ambition. But Hillary made her choice and has managed to carve out her own political career alongside, separate to, and even in spite of her husband’s.

During his election campaign, Bill Clinton announced that if he were to be president, this would be in partnership with his wife. And he stood true to his word, when five days after becoming president he announced Hillary’s place in his cabinet. The partnership was an already established one: in Arkansas, during Bill’s governorship, Hillary had led a taskforce on education reform, and she was not willing to let her success be left behind.

It was never Hillary’s plan to be merely a player in her husband’s game, and she made her own great ambition clear when she successfully ran for New York’s open seat in the Senate in 2000. The very Senate, in fact, that would preside over the Lewinsky scandal and would go on to vote against Bill’s impeachment, something that Hillary fought hard for.

Hillary was not going to let her husband’s indiscretions and lies get in the way of her career, and she knew that the best way to go about this was to get the rest of the Senate on her side. Then, having lost her bid to be the Democrat candidate in the 2008 Presidential race, Hillary fought back with a vengeance in 2016 to secure her place on the Democrat ticket.

Hillary’s experience can teach us the virtue of determination. It may be that your aspirations don’t quite work out how or when you expected them to, but that does not mean giving up—it just means finding a new way to go about achieving them.

As far as Hillary is concerned, she has spent decades supporting Bill’s career, she has defended him, argued for him, tirelessly campaigned for him, and assured his position in history. It is her turn to shine now, and it is clear that Bill (amongst others) believes that the least he can do is champion her the way that she has him.

Hillary spent eight years, she says, “with a title but no portfolio”—and in 2016, she is heading towards the biggest portfolio of all. She never gave up on her aspirations, and neither should you.
