Chapter Ten

Thursday p.m.

Jiff returned to his office around three o’clock while I was speaking with Michelle. She left when he walked up to us in the hall.

“Thanks for calling Jay and helping with Phillip,” he said. “The hearing lasted a lot longer than I anticipated or I would have been back sooner.”

“No problem,” I said as he brushed an errant hair away from my face, then leaned in kissing my forehead. “Phillip is in the conference room next to your office.”

Phillip jumped to his feet when Jiff and I entered the conference room while he reached to shake Jiff’s hand.

“Phillip had quite an encounter. There was a black Escalade parked outside his office that took off when your guys pulled up behind it,” I said.

“Try to relax, Phil,” Jiff said. “We’ll figure this out.”

“I think whoever killed Ian and Sophie is now after me,” Phillip said. “I gotta think it’s Angie’s uncle. If she knew we were starting a lab, then her dad knew and probably told him.”

“We can’t dismiss the possibility, so we will see if we can verify it, but first we need to keep you safe,” Jiff said. “Can you take a couple of days off without raising suspicion from Angie or the EPA?”

“Maybe. Why?” Phillip asked pacing in the conference room.

“I want you in a place no one knows where you are until we finish the background investigation,” Jiff said. “It’s a precaution, but one I think we should take since this incident has you rattled.”

“I could say I’m going on a deep sea fishing trip. Some of the guys Ian and I served with have been talking about planning a trip like that for a few months. I have some vacation days, and Angie will not want to follow me on that,” Phillip said.

“Good. Text her and your job. This is Thursday, so tell them you are taking a long weekend and will be back on Tuesday. Tell Angie you’ll be out on a fishing boat for three or four days. Tell her you’ll call her when you’re back in range, if you have a signal. Tell your office you’re just taking some time off unless they make you take vacation days. Don’t give them specifics,” Jiff said. “If they ask, be brief. Say you’re going to visit friends. That’s it.”

“Okay. While I was waiting for you, I thought of someone you should talk to that Ian and I worked with. Ed Chauvin is an environmentalist, older guy, close to retirement but Ian and I trust him. Ed told us he used to go fishing with his dad in this area when he was a kid. He’s taken photos over the years and you can see how the area changed from year to year as Ed and his dad grew older in the pictures. The guy has forty plus years of photos documenting the decline in the area.

“Ed worked with us collecting samples. Ian asked Ed if his samples ever came back as toxic from a particular area.
