Chapter Twenty
THE BEST-LAID PLANS
Sabine LeFèvre looked down at the contents of the small suitcase laid out on the bed in front of her and tutted. In happier moments she liked to think she had many fine qualities; however, an ability to travel light had never been one of them. Packing for a short trip was challenging enough, but nowhere near as bad as packing for a supposedly short trip that, in reality, would be considerably longer. She and Henry were scheduled to fly to Paris in a few hours, to catch a connecting flight to Moscow. Their return flights were scheduled for three days later.
The whole idea was to make it look as if Sabine were taking one of her regular trips abroad. Over the years, sheâd accompanied clients to many different cities. She sincerely loved Dublin, but when all was said and done, it remained a small town at heart, where it felt as if everyone knew everyone elseâs business. Accompanying a client to a conference, real or imaginary, followed by a couple of days of sightseeing, was usually a refreshing break from the norm. Such a service was only offered to regulars, of course, and, needless to say, it did not come cheap.
That was not what was happening on this occasion. Most of those flight bookings were for the benefit of anybody who might be unduly interested. The reality was that in Paris, she and Henry would be catching a taxi from the airport, which would take them to Saint-Cloud, where a car would be waiting that could not be traced back to them. They would then drive through the night to a tiny village outside Bilbao, to a house that could not be traced back to them either. Hence Sabine was leaving her home of over a decade with nothing more than a small suitcase. She corrected herself â now was not the time for melodrama. It wasnât as if she were leaving it for ever; it was merely a temporary solution to an unexpected situation.
When she had spoken to the enjoyably eccentric Bunny McGarry the day before, she had played things down, as she had been doing to Henry for a considerably longer period, but the reality was she was becoming more and more concerned.
Sabine was not naive â she knew there were people who would be very upset to hear she was writing a book, and she had known that as soon as she engaged an agent and feelers were sent out it was inevitable that the word would spread. It had been just three months since she and Henry had shared a bottle of wine on the beach and sheâd informed him that she was retiring. From that moment on, their unconventional relationship had begun to mould itself into a more familiar configuration.
She had come to know Henry during his time as her friendâs driver. Monica had been âin the businessâ before leaving it in an unusual manner. Sheâd married a client and theyâd moved to Australia for a fresh start.
