CHAPTER ELEVEN
CAMPBELL SEEMED ALMOST cheerful the next morning when Kitty went to his room to get the keys to the Jeep. She fixed his coffee, brought him a bowl of cereal and some toast and endured his detailed instructions on how to operate his vehicle. âYouâre absolutely certain you know how to handle a stick shift?â he asked her.
âYes, I told you I can. I once had a...â She almost blew her cover by admitting that Owen had indulged her on her sixteenth birthday by buying her a sleek four-on-the-floor sports car. Instead she told him sheâd once owned a 1975 Volkswagen Beetle, a car that only existed in her imagination.
âOkay, then. We have hills here, though. It can be a little tricky...â
She held out her hand and wiggled her fingers. âCampbell...â
âFine. I was just trying to give you a word of advice.â He placed the keys in her palm along with a shopping list and a one-hundred-dollar bill. âGet whatever you and the outlaw want,â he said. As she headed for the door, he asked her if she had the phone number to his apartment. When she assured him she did, he reminded her to call on her cell phone if she ran into any trouble.
âGreat idea,â she said, âif I had a cell phoneâwhich I donât. And what would you do if I did call? Run to my rescue?â
âNo. But Iâd call your knight in shining armor, Deputy Tommy Do-right.â He then picked up his own cell phone from the coffee table and tossed it to her. âTake this. I canât have you out on the highway without a means to communicate. Besides, I may decide I want chunky peanut butter instead of creamy.â
She slipped the device into the pocket of her sweatpants. âI wouldnât want to be unaware of such crucial decisions.â
She smiled as she returned to her room because she knew that peanut butter had nothing to do with Campbellâs decision to lend her the phone. Heâd never admit it, but she believed he was concerned about her going into town on her own for the first time. At least it was possible.
Since her own clothes needed a wash, she dressed in one of the newly altered outfits from the nightstand drawer. When she came out of the bathroom, Adam gave her a quizzical look. âWhat are you wearing that old stuff for?â
She checked her appearance in the mirror and was pleased with the work sheâd done on the skirt and blouse. She reached for her hair gel and immediately set the bottle back on the counter. The simple, draped lines of the clothing called for a more natural look.
âI kind of like these clothes,â she said, gently fluffing her hair with her fingers.
âTheyâre okay, I guess,â Adam said. âLetâs get going. I want to see Campbellâs car.â
She followed him out the door. âWow, this is a first. Youâre actually anxious to go to Value-Rite.â
He looked over his shoulder. âDid you hear me say anything about Value-Rite?â
She laughed.
