Rama, Nicaragua

Lance Corporal Oliver sat in his tent outside of Rama, Nicaragua, and ran through his deck of flash cards again. He’d been working on learning everything he could about the CH-53 for three weeks now, and he was amazed at how much he had memorized. He was almost ready to ask Captain White to quiz him on the instrumentation, but he hadn’t gotten the courage to ask him. More than anything in the world, he didn’t want to disappoint the pilots. The tent flap opened, and Corporal Evans entered.

“You want the good news or the bad news?” asked Evans.

“I guess let’s get the bad news over with,” replied Oliver.

“You ain’t getting promoted to corporal,” said Evans.

“What the hell? I just put on lance two months ago. What are you talking about?”

“Yeah, so about that. You’re in charge of Fire Team Two. That’s the good news. I was trying to get you the chevrons to go with it, but the captain wouldn’t budge. He didn’t think he could push it up the chain of command, and even with the war on, he thought you could use more time in grade. So, you get all the duties and responsibilities of a corporal, but not the extra twenty bucks a month.”

Oliver thought about it for a second before replying, “So, are you squad leader? And are we getting two cherries to replace you and Holmes?”

“Those are the right questions, Oliver,” replied Evans. “And, yeah, I’m getting the squad, and”—he looked at his notebook—“Lance Corporal Saunders is rotating in from stateside, and Private Harrington is a total cherry. They’re supposed to be here tomorrow, so you have that long to figure out how to ‘corporal.’”

“I’ve learned from some pretty effective corporals,” replied Oliver.

“Yeah, I love you too, pal, don’t get too excited.”

“I was talking about Mack,” said Oliver with a grin.

“Yeah, well, in all seriousness, you’ve earned this. Now don’t screw it up.”

“Thanks, and congratulations, Sergeant.” The two shook hands and Evans excused himself. Oliver thought back to the ride through the haboob into Iran on the way to the Manz. That had been eight months ago. Since then, he’d lost Mack, Yates, Holmes, and Strickland. Estrada and Palmer were both wounded enough to get rotated out. He didn’t even want to think about how bad it was going to get once they were done here. If they were shipped to Korea…

He put the thought away and went back to his flash cards.
