Finn’s heart lurched when he heard the approaching vehicle coming down the drive, but his bright smile faded as soon as he spotted his mother’s Mercedes. Grasping the rag off the hood of Maggie’s borrowed minivan, he began wiping the grease off his hands as he strolled out of the garage to meet her halfway. What was she doing here?

Despite his attempt to keep her away, she drove past him and pulled straight up to the garage, parking directly behind Maggie’s van. He followed slowly with increasing irritation, wondering if she did that intentionally to prevent him from fleeing.

There was no returning smile for her when she emerged with a smile. Instead, he focused on the grease under his nails and refused to look at her. “What are you doing here?”

Although her smile never wavered, he did see her steps falter from the corner of his eye, and he ignored the twinge of guilt he felt for being rude. He was not a rude man, and he had little time or patience for people who were. However, his parents brought out the worst in him, most likely because they were the unkind ones. His thoughts drifted to Roxanne, and he could almost hear her gasp of dismay that he would dare speak to his mother like that. However, the vision of her dismay was replaced by his father’s cruel words, and it was enough to ignite his anger and smother any remorse.

“I said I wanted to visit,” she said.

“It’s Sunday. The kids are home,” he reminded her.

And tomorrow was Monday, he continued silently. Roxanne would be back, and he could hardly wait. Although she had stopped by the night before, the kids had swarmed her as soon as they heard their low voices in the office. He had only managed to get in a few kisses before their approaching footsteps had him scooping her off the desk, lifting her through the air, and finally setting her back on her feet at a respectable distance with a disgruntled groan. It was a futile gesture, for he suspected the counselors at least knew their relationship had become intimate. Audrey and Maggie were aware that he had spent the night at Roxanne’s townhome, and it would not take a genius to conclude that they were not playing cards. It was impossible to hide that much chemistry and magic, and the room was so full of it when the kids entered and spied the heightened color on Roxanne’s cheeks that they froze in the doorway before lunging into her waiting arms. For his part, Finn had continued to gaze at Roxanne like a man staring at a great feast, and it was obvious enough to earn giggles from Rafe and Alana.

What was worse was his urgency to be with her. He had almost begged her to bring him home with her the night before and only managed to hold his tongue knowing she had spent the week working hard and was exhausted. There was no denying that he had fallen hard for the statuesque model, and everyone knew it.
