Chapter Fourteen

Stephanie pulled her cardigan more tightly around her shoulders as she and Bryan fell into step beside one another.

“I’m sorry I didn’t call first,” he began gently.

“No problem. I don’t have much time, though. Todd is coming by the office this evening so we can go over the intake system and things. He starts working with me in just a few days, and there’s a bit of a learning curve to it all.”

She tried to act normal but could hear just how brittle her voice sounded. She had seen the tension in Bryan’s face the second he’d stepped into the clinic. He wasn’t here to deliver good news. And as much as she knew she should get it over with, she couldn’t help but continue her babbling out of some misguided, instinctive sense of self-preservation.

“I’m so proud of him. Third in his class! Isn’t that amazing? He’s going to do really well here. I’m sure of it. Ever since he was little, he’s always loved animals. Paul and I couldn’t go a week without him bringing home an injured bird or orphaned baby bunny. He’s got such a big heart—”

“Stephanie,” Bryan murmured, slowing to a stop and laying a hand on her forearm.

She met his sympathetic gaze and the sadness in his eyes was almost her undoing. She looked away, focusing her attention on the tree line in the distance.

“Did you ever get more information on the blonde woman you were looking for?”

She considered his question and was about to answer but hesitated. On top of the information Max had gotten from Lydia, there was also the matter of the burner phone that Ethan had discovered and his confirmation that Paul’s phone hadn’t been with him on the boat that day. Not to mention the digging Ethan planned to do going forward. He’d made it very clear that he wasn’t acting in an official capacity, and the last thing she wanted was to get him into trouble for helping her. Better to keep that part of things close to the vest until she could come up with a feasible explanation for the intel she’d been collecting. If and when there was something of substance to share, she’d make sure to tell Bryan. Right now, there was nothing but dead ends, guesses, and suppositions. On her end, at least…

“Not much. I do know that Paul met with this woman at least one other time, though. And that they had some sort of argument or falling-out. I still don’t know who she is or what their connection is, but I have a couple irons in the fire to try to figure out her identity. I have some questions I feel like only she can answer.”

Bryan grimaced and nodded, blowing out a long breath. “I was afraid you were going to say that.”

“What do you mean?”

“Are you sure you really need to speak with her, Stephanie? You might not want to hear what she has to say. Maybe some things truly are better left alone .
