Chapter 54

Mera was becoming more and more aware her own feelings for Jariel Easton ran perhaps a little stronger and deeper than friendship or normal bonding. It was a conflict of uncertainty in her mind, because she had never in her life bonded with anyone before and could not be sure whether to be concerned about her feelings or not.

She had been warned a bonding was forever; it was the way of the Meran people—and a byproduct of their gift. But she had not been trained how to manage that part of her powers, or how to know what a bond was truly supposed to look like.

She told herself it would only take some adjusting. Easton had promised to be patient with her, as she learned and worked within her abilities with a freedom and goodness denied her on the Erebus.

Besides, she certainly had not bonded with BlackHeart and could not imagine ever being able to have done so, even if she had remained with him forever. For Easton, once the process began, their bond formed quickly and naturally.

Still, the empty longing deep, deep down—the same longing that had plagued her since she was a small child—had not retreated. In fact, it seemed the closer and stronger her bond with Easton became, the greater the longing within her became, growing from a hidden murmur to a steady and constant ache. It threatened to split her sanity apart.

She stopped sleeping at night, and would sit in a huddle at the end of her bed, wrapped in the cloak Easton gave her even though she was not cold, and staring at the abyss of sky and sea beyond her open Gallery—until her eyes turned gritty and dry from lack of rest.

She focused on her breathing, in and out, in and out—as if surely the ache would withdraw.

It did not.

The only way to bear it was to distract herself. Moments in Easton’s company soothed her, if only temporarily, and her heart thrilled each time he called her River or smiled at her.

It was not that his smile had changed, nor the tone of his voice. Something within Mera had changed, subtly shifting and growing over time as her bond with Easton strengthened. Suddenly, her emotions felt unstable and even frightening in their increasing depths.

The days stretched long and without incident. The closer they came to Asteriae, the more anxious and nervous Mera became. She had never been to the Kingdom of Stars before. And then, through the haze of the horizon of sea and sky, it appeared. A long stretch of land disappearing into the distance to the north and the south.

“You look ready to jump ship and swim the distance to shore.”

Mera laughed, the sound more nervous and giddy than she would have liked. She smiled over at Easton as he came to stand beside her on the Fore-deck. Their arms brushed lightly as he settled his hands on the railing next to hers. “You know me well,” she answered his comment teasingly.
