Chapter 10

“You’re going to make us dinner?” Grandma Gerty asked in a humorous voice the following Tuesday. Nate laughed. “You have to have faith in me, Grandma. How do you think I’ve survived living on my own all this while?”

“You eat out.”

“That I do. But I learned how to cook a few meals. And tonight I am making I’m making pasta, with seared salmon and you’ll fall in love with my pasta sauce.”

His grandmother still looked skeptical. “I’ll believe it when I see it. If it all falls apart, the chef left us some leftovers from last night.” Thankfully, Grandma didn’t stay around long enough to keep doubting his cooking skills. As he sliced and diced the ingredients for the dinner he was preparing, Nate found several thoughts racing through his mind.

His thoughts first went to thinking about Danielle and how much he’d enjoyed her company on the trip to Camp Hemet. No doubt, there was a growing attraction between them. But there was a part of him that thought a lot about the fact that she was his mother’s employee. Of course, he was old enough and could decide who he wanted to date. But he still felt something he couldn’t put a finger on standing in their way. Danielle had opened up to him about her life last weekend. He had opened up some painful parts of his life, too. He felt that had brought them closer somehow. Her innocent kiss on his cheek had him tossing and turning that night. And even now, his cheek tingled at the thought of it. He had seen little of her this week. He knew his mother was working feverishly on an upcoming launch and Danielle was in the throes of that and so he hadn’t been able to talk to her as much as he’d like to.

Nate looked forward to the next two weekends of fun they had planned. A smile crossed his face at the thought. Yeah, he liked Danielle Greene a lot. But he knew from experience that liking a woman or even being attracted to her didn’t mean he needed to pursue a relationship. As he added tomatoes, onions, and garlic to a blender for the tomato sauce, he prayed gently. “I like her Lord. Now, what am I going to do about that?”

“You’re talking to yourself.”

Nate turned around to find Danielle standing next to the large kitchen island, smiling at him. From where he stood, the light rays from the sun outside cast a glow on her pretty brown skin in a way that made Nate’s heart do a little dance.

“How much of it did you hear?” If he was being honest with himself, he wished he could express the fact that he was attracted to her right now. But he knew it was important to pray about it first. And to see if she was interested in him beyond their growing companionship.

“Not much. But I heard your voice,” Danielle responded, walking over to the refrigerator.

Danielle still had about an hour left before work was over for the day.
