CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

REGAN

Regan was leaving the parking garage when her cell phone rang. She grabbed it from the seat next to her and clicked onto the call.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Regan. This is Maggie O’Neill. I need you to do a favor for me. I’m supposed to help Brian with his lunch today, and I can’t leave Gracie’s. Your sisters are in a meeting and suggested I call you. Will you please go to the hospital and help him?”

“Is ... is that going to be okay with Jill?” Regan said through a throat gone dry. The word was none of the Sullivan sisters were to be there.

“Jill? Why should it matter to her?” said Maggie.

“I ... really don’t know,” Regan replied. “Brian and I are just friends.”

“I see. Well, I need you to do this for me. Will you?”

“Okay,” Regan said reluctantly. “I know you wouldn’t ask if you didn’t need me.”

“Thanks. Gotta go. We’re really busy.”

Maggie hung up, leaving Regan no choice but to follow through. She turned the car toward Tampa, hoping her being with Brian wouldn’t be an issue for either of them.

###

At the hospital, Regan made her way to Brian’s room, reminding herself friends helped each other without judging their actions, and if Brian wanted to get back together with someone like Jill, that was his business, not hers.

Brian’s door was half-open as Regan approached it. She heard voices and paused, not wanting to interrupt.

“Jill, I told you I’d take care of the situation. That didn’t mean I’d tell Tony he couldn’t work for me. It meant quite the opposite.”

Jill’s voice, sounding as if it were on a speaker phone, came through in sharp, little bites. “Honestly, Brian, you know you can make more money with the deal I’ve set up for you in the North Carolina mountains. A whole development all for you. No hangers-on, like Tony.”

Overhearing this, Regan felt as if her blood had turned to ice. Tony was a hard worker who’d held Brian’s small company together while he was recuperating. Didn’t Jill understand that? Silently, Regan waited for a response from Brian.

“I know you mean well, but I’m proud of the business I’m building here in Florida, and I trust Tony Morelli to step in while I’m laid up.”

“But this deal I’m talking about could be so much more than that,” said Jill. “Honestly, Brian, I’m better at some of this business stuff than you’ll ever be. How about trusting me?”

Brian’s words came with calm firmness. “Trust is a two-way street. I thought you knew that.”

Outside his room, Regan wasn’t sure if she should tiptoe away or move forward.

“Look,” said Brian. “Maggie should be here any minute. I’d better get off the phone.”

“It’s not over, Brian. Somehow, I’ll knock some sense into your head. Have a good lunch. Talk to you later.”

During the silence that followed, Regan knocked on his door and entered.

The bright smile that crossed his face warmed her insides. “I’m substituting for Maggie today. Hope you don’t mind.”

“Mind? I love it,” he said so smoothly Regan suddenly felt shy.
