GRACE

“We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.”

DOLLY PARTON

Well, that was weird. And a little abrupt.

He said he could get used to this. She was pretty sure he hadn’t intended to say it out loud. And she was also sure he hadn’t meant staying in the suite.

But she had to admit, it was nice having the extra space.

And then he said he liked the kiss but bolted for his room without even a good night.

Grace didn’t think she’d ever understand men.

She carried the champagne glasses to the kitchenette and set them on the counter, pouring the rest of the bottle down the drain. They wouldn’t be drinking anymore. After filling a large glass with water, she turned the lights off and headed to her own room.

Because of the whole mix-up at check-in, Carl had given her the room with the king-size bed. It hadn’t really mattered which room was hers; she was just grateful for separate bedrooms. He’d been very tempting tonight while they were sitting on the couch.

She lay in her bed, her Kindle next to her, unable to focus on the words on the screen. Her mind kept trying to figure out the puzzle that was Carl Montgomery. Her brain kept telling her to forget about any feelings she might have regarding Carl.

But her heart was getting into the conversation now. And it was getting tougher to stop her heart from feeling what it wanted to feel.

She hadn’t thought she wanted a relationship. After Drake, she was sure she was done with men for a long while. She thought about Drake and her feelings for him. What was it about him that led her to say yes to drinks that first time? It was probably ego. After all, he was a good-looking guy, and him asking her out had felt good.

While she hadn’t felt any flutters or passion in Drake’s kisses, it was nice to have someone show interest in her. That certainly wasn’t an inspiring reason for a relationship, but she was glad she hadn’t slept with him.

She’d been in such a hard place taking care of her mother. Most of her social life had come to a screeching halt because she just didn’t have the time, the energy, or the mental capacity for it. She was
