Chapter Seven
Mark brought the fighter jet in to land. Ever since the damn aliens had shown up, a squadron of birds had been placed in the skies surrounding their ship at all times. Mark didn't blame them for not landing their ship on the surface. Knowing the government and military, the aliens more than likely wouldn't be able to get the thing back in the air again if they did. Mark believed his superiors still expected their unplanned guests might turn hostile at any moment due to the fact they refused to get any closer.
There had been so much activity the last couple of months, ever since Mark and his teammates had been recalled from leave. He would have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to know something was going on. What exactly it was, they still hadn't managed to get any concrete proof of. The DNA manipulation seemed to be the most common rumour they heard, but he'd also heard whispers of the aliens being carriers for some unknown disease which they'd all been contaminated with. There was also talk about body mutations. Mark had even heard that Air Chief Marshal Coleman's son had disappeared.
None of them knew what to believe, however, the fact that neither Mark nor any of the others had seen Oliver Coleman in two months or more had him a little worried.
The landing went smoothly, just like all the others recently. Even though the activities between the aliens and Mark's superiors seemed to have escalated and heated up the last couple of months, things in the sky remained calm. Mark thanked his lucky stars as the last thing he wanted was an all-out war with an alien ship that had unknown capabilities.
Mark taxied the plane back to his designated area and started the shutdown process. Van pulled up in the bay next to his, and after several minutes of checks and double checks to make sure everything was in order and his flight log completed, Mark climbed out of the cockpit and down onto the tarmac. Van met him and the pair of them made their way inside the hanger to the locker rooms to change out of their flight suits.
"I've got a really funky feeling about everything that's going on around here," Van said as they walked inside.
"You're not the only one. As much as I want to know what the hell is going on with our visitors, I want to know what's happened with Olly more. He's not the type of man to just take off without notifying anyone, even if he does hate having his father as the senior officer on base," Mark mused.
Van grunted beside him before he pushed open the door to the locker room. They walked into a hive of activity. Others, like them, had just come off duty and were peeling off their flight suits while more men were shrugging into their suits and getting ready to start their shift.
Mark stopped and chatted with several guys on
