Chapter 27

Rose. My sweet little Rose. My sweet, sweet Amelie… Chet Bellamy smiled to himself at the sight of Rose walking into class. My little Rose by any other name… If you didn’t exist, someone would have to invent you.

And not because Chet was attracted to Rose. Chet had never been attracted to children, although his wife would dispute that. No. Rose wasn’t his type. She was too pale, too weird, and yes, too young. But Charlene had been suspicious—to put it mildly—of Chet’s denials on that score. Sometimes when they argued, Charlene would call him a monster, a creep, a pervert, and Chet knew part of her shrieking insistence was so that she could justify to herself why Chet never touched her anymore.

They had been too young when they got married. That was the problem. They met in college, in California, where Chet was majoring in English and psychology, and Charlene in social work. She was a waitress at the college bar where Chet and his friends would drink most nights. She was cute, with her curly hair and her pink headbands, her small hands—Chet loved small hands—and it was only a matter of time before he asked her out. And for a while, he was in love.

But that was fifteen years ago, and now, most days, it took all of Chet’s willpower not to tell Charlene the truth, which was that she was an old harpy who hated everything about him, that once she’d been sweet and pretty and loving, but now she’d become old and bitter and ugly, and that he’d rather eat glass than make love to her.
