Chapter Nine

Every moment Abigail was gone from my side, I felt her absence acutely. I’d waited a very long time to spend an evening with her, and despite how I’d managed to get her here, she was here. With me. I knew it was hard on her to be there after everything, and with a beautiful smile on her face that must have been sheer torture. But she’d handled herself like the queen she was.

I stood next to the bar, where I could keep an eye on the hallway where she’d disappeared to go to the ladies’ room. Not that I thought she would try to slip out the back. As tempted as Abigail might be to escape this evening, I didn’t think she would.

It was hard on her, sure. But there was something else. Something between us. Just like I had every other minute for the last twenty-four hours, I replayed every second of the kiss we’d shared the night before. It had been so much more than just a kiss. There were feelings there that couldn’t be denied. By either of us. And I’d be dammed if I let even one more night go by without getting to the bottom of it. It was time. It was way past time. We just needed to get through the party. It was more important than even Abigail realized.

I glanced again toward the hallway but there was still no sign of her. I tossed the rest of my whiskey back, slammed the glass on the bar, and was just about to go in search of her when I was stopped.

“Phillip Conrad.”

Anyone else and I would have immediately excused myself. But when I turned and saw the face of my old college roommate, my face split into a smile.

“Trent Thomas. What are you doing here?” I took his hand and pulled him into a back-slapping man hug. “It’s been what? Twenty years?”

“At least.” He grinned. “I’m in town working on a big acquisition. There’s a lot of opportunity out West. I was told this was the place to be tonight.” He turned to survey the room and I let my eyes follow his, seeing what he was seeing. A bunch of self-important men and women trying to make themselves even more important. It was stupid. All of it.

“If this is what passes for entertainment in Aspen Valley, I may have to rethink my decision.” He tipped his glass to his lips and grinned. “Or at least go out and find my own, if you know what I mean?”

“I’d say that’s probably a better option, buddy.” I chuckled. “It’s good to see you, man. I wish I’d known you were coming to town. We could…” My thought drifted away as I once again looked toward the hallway. “Sorry, what brings you to town?”

“I’m always on the lookout for a good development opportunity and frankly, I’ve been looking for a change. So here I am, and…” Trent laughed as I once more let my gaze drift toward the hallway where Abigail should have already reappeared.
