She wanted to go out on a proper date. I hung up the phone and stared at it long after the screen went black.
For the first time in years, the idea of a real date, especially one with a woman I actually enjoyed, filled me with joy instead of dread. I couldnât think of anything Iâd like more than going out with her.
Most importantly, it would make her happy, and with every cell in my whole body, the only thing I wanted in the world was to make Jessie happy.
Damn.
And if that wasnât an indication that this woman was getting under my skin, Iâm not sure what was.
The date had to be special. More than special. It had to be perfect.
But that was a problem because I had no idea how to date, let alone how to make a date perfect. I glanced around. My eyes landed first on Kenny, who was always nearby. He really was the best assistant and would do everything in his powerâwhich, when paired with my credit card, was substantialâto work just the right magic. But it wouldnât be enough. I turned where I stood, and my eyes landed on Brittany.
Yes.
Sure, she was suspicious of me and my intentions with her friend; sheâd made that much perfectly clear. But that was more the reason why it was perfect. Brittany would know exactly how to make it an amazing date and more importantly, sheâd want it to be amazing.
âBrittany!â
She jumped at my bellow, but quickly composed herself.
She held her leather portfolio against her chest and walked slowly toward me. âI didnât realize it was time for the next meeting.â
âItâs not.â I glanced at my watch but didnât really look at it. Suddenly I didnât care about the stupid merger. It wasnât important. Not like Jessie. âBut I need your help.â
Instantly, she narrowed her eyes. âJessie?â She shook her head and started to back away. âI donât want to get involved in this, Shane. Not anymore than I already am. Itâs bad enough that Iâ¦â She gestured between the two of us. âI donât like lying to my friend. And not telling her who you are, wellâ¦I agreed not to, butââ
âNo, no.â I stopped her before she could talk herself into telling Jessie my name. I already knew that Iâd tell her, but not yet. I needed this first. And then⦠âItâs not like that, Brittany. This will only be a good thing for Jessie. And I do appreciate you keeping my secret for a little bit longer. I promise you thereâs a very good reason Iâm keeping my identity from her, and it wonât be much longer.â
She eyed me.
âReally,â I said. âIâm going to tell her soon. I just need to know she feels the same way about me that I feel about her. Iâm falling in love with her, and I donât want to mess it up.â
There was no one more surprised by my words than I was, but as soon as they slipped out, I knew it was true.
