Chapter 9
âRemember,â Bo chided, âdon't hold the sword too looselyââ
âAnd not too tightly either,â Alex said. âYeah, yeah. You have told me a million times already.â
âAnd still, there is room for improvement before our final show down,â Bo said. âSo, letâs get in one more round before the sun sets completely.â
Alex gripped the hilt of the flaming sword tightly. She glanced at Boâs stance trying to figure out exactly when he would attack. But nothing in her human reflexes worked as fast asked his angel ones. Without warning, he lunged at her, bringing his sword down and a powerful arc. This left her with only enough time to raise her own Heavenly sword and defense to block his blow. His sword met hers with so much force it drove her down to her knees.
âYouâre getting better,â Bo said offering his hand to her.
Alex took it, and he helped her to her feet. âIt's because I have such a good teacher.â
âI'm pretty cool, if I do say so myself.â
âAnd so modest,â Alex laughed. âBut seriously, thank you for helping me. Can I ask you a personal question?â
Alex tapped the red Ruby in the center of the swordâs hilt, and watched as it shrank back into a pendant. She took the pendant, wrapped it around her neck, and clasped it shut.
Bo eyed her. âI suppose,â he said.
âCan we really trust Azriel?â
Bo rubbed the back of his neck. âThat's a complicated question to answer,â he said. âI suppose it depends on what he said. Normally, he likes to speak in riddles, but I'm not sure if he treats humans and angels the same.â
âHe told me that Chase would need to satisfying karma, but I don't know what that means.â
Shrugging, Bo said, âNeither do I, but I would guess it means he's still salvageable to some extent. Now, is it my turn to ask you a personal question?â
Alex chuckled. âIf you would like to, go ahead.â
âNot to bring up bad memories, but are you sure you want to do all this to save someone like him?â Bo asked.
She could easily see why he would ask something like this even though she hadn't told him everything she had seen in the mirror back in Michael's office. Given the fact that he had choked her, and then stabbed her back in the warehouse, she could easily see why he would ask.
âI'm not sure I have a perfect answer for your question, but I will tell you what I am thinking,â Alex said. âYou're not wrong to think Chase is not worth all of the effort. I mean, he did kill me. I even saw some things he did the last time I went to Heaven. It made me realize that I don't know him as much as I thought I did.â
Alex touched the Ruby pendant. âYou see, for the last couple of years I thought that he and I were building a lifetime together. Memory by memory I thought we would grow old together. And I also agree that he is not worth all of the effort.
