It really happened as Shern Avij had foretold. The Conqueror completely conquered the lowland country, skirting the shores of the Great Sea, and the mountains rising near the South Pole. He demolished thirty towns and wiped out the Sherns without a trace. Fourteen long lunar days have passed since the conquerors landed on the mysterious shore, and up till now the lucky streak has followed them without end and change. But on the fourteenth day, after over an earthly year of hardships and continuous struggle, they found themselves far from the sea, in a mountainous and inaccessible country.

The sun was moving low here in the daytime and made an arch behind their backs across the sky. The evening aurora burned long into the night, testifying that the star of the day wasn’t crawling deep hidden under the horizon. They had already passed the southern storm zone, so the days were cooler, and at night the frost did not bother them so much.

Huge ring mountains rose in front of them like fortresses. Steep green meadows laced with deep gullies glistened in the sun above the foothills covered with the impassable belt of forests and thickets. And higher, there was only a solid rock, jagged in crags and cliffs and covered with a gleaming crown of ice from above ... Beside those enormous rings, others low and vast rose and formed a round, forest covered embankment ...

There was no living soul to be found in the narrow green valleys between the rings. Here and there, they only found abandoned and deliberately demolished houses. The ruins, however, looked inconspicuous. Apparently, those were only shepherds’ huts, hurriedly abandoned and destroyed without regret, while running away from the approaching enemy.

But where did the Sherns hide? Marek involuntarily turned his eyes to those mighty and natural stone strongholds stretching to the south with which the whole country was covered. Mountains piled up behind the mountains, enormous ramparts, dangerous and unattainable. The Conqueror realized that here his devastating expedition must end. From now on his only task could be to harass the Sherns so much in their inaccessible strongholds, that they would finally demand peace themselves ...

He frowned and sat down on a boulder and looked at the strange country in front of him ... ‘Peace with the Shern! – Peace with the Sherns!’ He knew it would equal a defeat, for it would bring no benefit to the people, nor would it guarantee anything to them ... When he leaves, the Sherns will rise in power and begin to disturb the people again, not caring about the promises and assurances he would force out of them. For a time, they would still be held back by the memory of the terrible defeat on the plains and the horror of the Conqueror’s name, but what will happen later? Will they not be willing to take even a more awful revenge to make up for the unexpected defeat?

Giving firearms to the people, Marek kept the secret of making explosives to himself.
